The disability experience is often overlooked or inaccurately represented in the media today and it often brings about two disability stereotypes—the hero or the victim. But there is so much in between those extremes that is never examined, acknowledged, or understood. What better way to open our eyes and explore the world of disabilities than with those whose lives have been shaped by it?
Welcome to the Books and Banter Book Club—a book club which recognizes both writers and characters with disabilities. The intention? Gaining an appreciation for and understanding of the disability experience and the often-overlooked gifts that come with it. And, because the disability experience is as diverse as our population, we’ll discover a variety of perspectives and experiences as we meet a new author each month. We’ll read fiction, non-fiction, memoir and maybe a children’s book or two.
Each month we’ll discuss more than the book—we’ll dig into the way disability is portrayed in our culture, gain awareness and etiquette through a safe conversational space and, when possible, have a face-to-face conversation with the author via Zoom.
Additionally, Zoom participants will be entered into a drawing for a giveaway of five curated gift boxes delivered to your home address following the in-person session.
Books and Zoom events will be announced each month. September’s Zoom event will take place on September 22nd, at 5pm Mountain Time.
I look forward to seeing you on the B&B Zoom meeting and sharing the experience of disability through the eyes of our authors.
